New York Introduces 'Clean Slate' Initiative for Formerly Incarcerated Individuals

Governor Kathy Hochul signed the Clean Slate Act into law on Thursday, offering the possibility of record sealing to approximately two million individuals with prior convictions in New York.  

As part of this comprehensive criminal justice initiative, those who successfully complete their sentences and maintain a clean record for a specified period (three years for misdemeanors, eight for eligible felonies) will have their convictions sealed. However, it's important to note that the most severe offenses, such as sex crimes, murder, and the majority of Class A felonies, are not eligible for automatic sealing under this legislation.
